In Tigard, you’re never too old for prom

By Makayla Schmierer

Senior citizens all around the Tigard Community joined current students in the cafeteria on Feb. 11 for the annual Senior Citizens’ Prom.

The Jazz Band played classic songs and 50’s decorations brought the area to life. Senior Citizen Prom is put on every year by Leadership and is an event that brings together the community–young and old–through dancing and conversation.

Senior and ASB Activities Kynzey Mitzel looks forward to the event every year for how unique and special it is to Tigard. “Its so fun to see how much the guests enjoy the company of each other and even the leadership students,” Mitzel said. “As soon as Jazz Band begins playing the senior citizens pull us students out on the dance floor and show us how it’s done.”

Each year at the event there is a crowning of King and Queen, “They never see it coming, especially if they have never attended the dance before!” Mitzel said. “The royalty of this year’s dance turned out to be Tigard High School alumni from 1958.”

Junior Natalie Carlson has attended the event for the past three years. “It’s always a successful community event that gives us the opportunity to reach out and represent Tigard High in a fun way,” Carlson said.
