Student organized club offers free tutoring to THS students

Have you ever been sitting in a class, clueless, and the teacher starts calling on students:
“Don’t call on me! Don’t call on me. Don’t call on me,” you keep saying to yourself.
Of course, you do get called on, your face turning red.  Instead of being embarrassed, get help from the new Tigard High School Tutoring Club, organized by junior Keenan Cabrera. The club offers free tutoring in all subjects in the library.
“I have always been passionate about helping people,” said Cabrera about starting the club.
To get free tutoring, students should go to the counseling office and fill out a tutoring form with their email and phone number. Cabrera will connect students with tutors, who will meet in the library at set times.  Every tutor has at least a 3.5 GPA, and each received teacher recommendations.  In addition, tutors receive Creative, Action Service (CAS), a requirement for IB diploma students, who must give hours of community service.
“I didn’t want just any ordinary NHS (National Honor Society) project, I wanted to do something important and meaningful,” said Cabrera.
When Cabrera thought up this tutoring club, he contacted teacher Ken Teschner as the adviser for the club.
“We need to acknowledge there is a need for help,” Teschner said. “Teachers are available but the demand exceeds what can be provided.”
