The Tigard High wrestling team attended a tournament at Southridge High School and placed second behind Southridge. Southridge came in first with a total of 306.5 team points while Tigard had 289 team points. Third place went to Milwaukie High School with 185 points.
“We competed exceptionally well,” said junior Omar Pelaez. “We had a few slip-ups, but we can learn from these.”
Senior Zackery Vollstedt, 152 pounds, won first place in his weight class. Vollstedt pinned every one of his opponents.
“It’s finally good to see all the hard work paying off,” said Vollstedt.
Other wins for the day include seniors Alex Anokhin, 195 pounds, and, Victor Ceja, 285 pound heavyweight, who both placed first in their weight classes, and juniors Eli Neely, 170 pounds, and Luis “Omar” Duran Vega, 113 pounds, who both placed second in their weight classes. Out of 25 team members, 18 Tigard boys placed in their weight class.
“Everyone worked hard and it really paid off,” said Anokhin. “Although we were shooting for first, second was a solid finish. We need to just keep getting better and not be satisfied.”
Tigard’s next wrestling meet will be held at McMinnville High School on Thursday, Jan 23.
