The Tigard Tigers may have played some good volleyball last night, but it wasn’t quite good enough to beat the Newberg Tigers.
“Newberg was just a strong team all around,” said sophomore Jenna Horton. “There were some mistakes here and there that shouldn’t have happened and brought us down into a hole but I think we can beat them next time.”
Newberg and Tigard were evenly matched. Throughout the three games the score was tied, but somehow Newberg managed to earn the last few points pulling them ahead.
“Sometimes, teams just get beat and tonight we did, but we fought hard and hustled. We just didn’t get a break,” said varsity volleyball coach Robert Coelho.
Highlights of the volleyball game included: kills by outside hitters sophomore Cassidy Erickson, junior Kaylie Boschma and senior Lindsey Rosette, great blocks by middle hitters senior Michelle Simmons and junior Ashley Holzgang, and unbelievable digs by Jenna Horton. Unfortunately Tigard’s great plays were only enough leave them biting Newberg’s tail. In the first game the score was 25-22, the score of the second game was 28-6, and the score of the third game was 25-14, all in which Newberg lead the Tigers.
“I think that we shouldn’t have let them win in the first three sets,” said junior middle hitter Sasha-Nicole Hershey-Lomax. “Like coach said, we didn’t catch a break, but Tigard played hard tonight and we didn’t give up.”
Although the Tigard Tigers lost tonight, there is still hope for beating Newberg the next time around.
