Yesterday the Ski team competed in the 22 annual Christine Cato Memorial Race.
The race is in memory of Christine Cato, who passed in a skiing accident in 1989, just before her senior year at Beaverton High School. The race does not count for points, and multiple leagues gather to compete in the course, as well as costume contests. This year’s most notable costumes were those of Beaverton skiers Ben Murphy, and one of his teammates, who went at it in only a speedo and racer bib.
The Tigard team came off to a promising start this year, placing ninth overall, but second within our own league. The full results of the race can be found here. This year’s team is composed largely of newcomers, many of whom raced for the first time today. Coach David Millar of the Tigard team was happy that Cato was the first race for these students.
“Cato gives kids a great first racing experience,” he says. “Without any of the normal pressure.”
Tigard will be in the Metro League again this year, with races weekly until the end of February. The racers are getting excited for another competitive season.
“This year,” said racer Jake Sanders, “Metro won’t know what hit ‘em.”
