On Sept. 29, Tigard-Tualatin School Board officials publicly responded to a violent incident that occurred at Hazelbrook Middle School.
“The TTSD Board of Directors stands firm in our practice of holding those who commit acts of violence accountable as guided by Board policy,” TTSD stated. “We are also united in upholding an educational environment that fosters inclusivity, diversity, and respect.”
The situation is now a criminal investigation however, due to laws protecting minors, no details will be shared with the public.
On Friday, Sept. 29, Hazelbrook was evacuated due to a direct threat of violence towards the school. Superintendent Dr. Sue Rieke-Smith released a statement detailing the situation.
According to Rieke-Smith, “[…] we received an email that included a new threat of a shooting at Hazelbrook and bomb threats to the homes of specific District administrators. Once this threat came in, school leaders followed our safety plan and put our building on ‘Hold’ while we immediately began plans to evacuate and get everyone out of the building and home”.
The school was closed the following Monday, Oct. 2, to students although staff were asked to return. The threats have since been deemed “not credible” by law enforcement and the FBI according to a safety update released by TTSD.
