It was a night to remember for the music stars who took the stage in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, Nov. 24. The American Music Awards (AMA’s) aired on Fox from 8p.m.-11p.m. with host Pitbull who spiced up the night with his own performance of “Timber” featuring Ke$ha.
The performances kicked off with Katy Perry giving a stunning show of her song “Unconditional” with a Japanese theme. The room was packed full with all of the talented artists in the music business including One Direction and Ariana Grande who both performed and won their first AMA award. Grande won the new artist of the year which was presented by Kohl’s, while One Direction won the favorite pop/rock band award.
As for country, Lady Antebellum won favorite country band, and Luke Bryan won favorite male country artist. Taylor Swift also had a big night, she won favorite female country artist. Not only did Swift’s album, “Red,” win favorite country album, but she also receivied the artist of the year award.
“I thought it was put together really well this year! My favorite performance was definitely Christina Aguilera and A Great Big World duo of their new song “Say Something,” said senior Remi Harrison.
It was also a big night for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who took home the favorite artist and album in the rap/hip-hop category. They were on tour in Miami, Florida and gave an energetic performance which was shown live on the AMA’s.
Rihanna also captured the audience with a chilling performance of her song “Diamonds” and also was awarded the Icon Award. It was a special moment for Rihanna when she received the award from her mother who gave an inspirational speech for her daughter to express Rihanna’s hard work and dedication.
“Miley’s performance of “Wrecking Ball” was really confusing because she had a cat for her back drop which did not fit the song at all,” said Harrison.
The king of pop strikes again after winning favorite male artist in both pop/rock and soul/r&b categories in 2007, Justin Timberlake takes home the same awards in 2013.
