The league champions of Tigard’s choir department kicked off this year with the fall variety show. As a homage to the approaching holiday of Halloween, the concert was themed “Music of the Night.”
Choir director Susan Hale started off the night by introducing Choralation.
“This part of the concert is about the part of the night that involves dreaming,” said Hale. Choralation sang two a cappella lullabies: “Evening Song” by Zoltan Kodaly and “Lullaby” by Kirby Shaw.
Seniors Corey Floom and Damian Vonahlefeld then took over emceeing, cracking jokes while introducing the next acts. Soloists of the first half included sophomore Amy Lichtenstein, junior Sarah Wallace, and seniors Amanda Uhl, Jaiden Wirth, and Paul Harestad. Juniors Jeff Frantz and Everett Dalton collaborated on an acoustic cover of “Demons” by Imagine Dragons.
The last solo of the first half was Harestad, who performed “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Miserables.
“His solo gave me chills,” said junior audience member Molly Scherner.
Following Harestad was a dance number choreographed by junior Sarah Doan, performed by junior Tigerettes and choir members Jenna Bair, Jessica Forster, and Doan. The routine was a lyrical number performed to “City” by Sara Bareilles. The number closed the first half of the concert.
Intermission came to an end and Bair returned to the stage to perform a solo of “I Could Have Danced All Night” by Lerner and Loewe. Soloists junior Hannah Fullmer and sophomore Kate Thresher performed after Bair, leading up to the final act.
Concert Choir took the stage and performed two songs, “The Stars Are With the Voyager” and “The Moon is Distant From the Sea.” The first song was an a cappella arrangement, the second was accompanied by Kathy Jensen. As Hale brought the concert to an end, Uhl and senior Fotini “Fo” Dorrance presented Jensen and Hale with flower arrangements.
The next choir concert is the annual Holiday Concert, which will be held on Dec. 10. On Dec. 17, the THS Concert Choir will perform at The Grotto for the holidays.
