Sen. Dianne Feinstein believes that a new proposal to ban Military styled assault rifles should be put into action. President Obama has been busy with the pressure built up from the public. As for the rest of the country, Obama’s decision could be a mistake if he goes along with feinsteins proposal. Feinstein introduced the ‘Assault Weapons Ban of 2013’ on Thursday of last week.
After the shootings in Newton, Aurora, and Tucson, Government officials have been working closely on ways to prevent more tragic events that have hit the U.S. with a surprise. Feinsteins Act consist of banning any weapon with a quickly detachable magazine, a magazine with a capability of holding more than 10 rounds, all semi-automatic shotguns, and all ammunition feeding devices capable of holding more than 10 rounds.
“”I agree with it because the things that they are banning, are being banned for a reason, and it is meant to prevent future violence. They aren’t punishing responsible gun owners. They are simply preventing irresponsible people from abusing the second amendment.” said senior Kenny Lamborn “I think freedom means responsibility, and we now have the responsibility to do things like this to keep people safe. “
Feinsteins goal is to abolish assault rifles over time. This goal has many people outraged and has sent the National Rifle Association (NRA) over the edge. The NRA added that, “Feinstein has been trying to ban guns from law-abiding citizens for decades.” The organization is strongly confident that Congress will reject the act knowing that this ban will not work with Americans. Feinsteins strong headed approach has created a medias thread which has been viewed on may news broadcasts. A prime video that struck the media was about a former Marine, Joshua Boston, who began by sending a letter to Sen. Feinstein which stated “No ma’am, I will not register my guns”, and later turned into a video showing that Boston would not register his rifles.
“The fact that I’m supposed to be punished for doing nothing more than owning a rifle that looks scary because its stock isn’t made out of wood,” said Boston “I own the guns I own because I acknowledge mankind’s shortcomings instead of pretending like they don’t exist, there are evil men in this world and there just may be a time when I need to do the unthinkable to protect me or my family.”
Self defense is a crucial ability to obtain. As for schools, police officers are always on watch for potential internal or external threats. But the real question is, are they doing enough to protect our schools? After recent shooting, some may say no, but the majority would say yes. The true answer depends on the area in which the school is located. Rural communities would be the least likely to get attacked, but suburban and urban communities would be the biggest targets.
“I think that there aren’t enough police officers in the school. I see too many people with drugs and hear about too many things that really shouldn’t happen. School should be a safe place, not a place to worry about coming to every day.” said senior Jasmine Stroum.
New York has recently changed their gun laws which bans assult rifle, large capacity magazines and keeping guns from dangerous mental health patients. Many other states have taken the act into consideration. Oregon has yet to change its laws, but sheriffs all around the counties are built up with anger toward Obama.
