“Merry Christmas!” exclaims Key Club members Sage Wegehaupt and Jaelyn Baisa as they stand outside of Safeway, ringing small red bells and dancing merrily to “Carol of the Bells.” The cold wind blew and the girls kept dancing, bundled up in mittens and scarves, still ringing the bells. The exiting customer replied, “Merry Christmas!” and dropped a few coins into the hanging red kettle.
Tigard High Key Club members volunteered to ring bells for the Salvation Army outside of the King City Safeway on Nov. 26, 27, and 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. Salvation Army has been using red kettles to collect money the from public towards issues such as disaster relief and impoverished children since 1801.
Key Club adviser John Lancaster says it’s nice to have Key Club members volunteer for bell ringing because “The Salvation Army needs a lot of volunteers around the holiday time, there are a lot of underprivileged kids who need the help.”
“I had so much fun bell ringing. I think having fun while doing it lifted everyone’s spirits, and it’s for a good cause,” said Wegehaupt.
