TTSD decided that 2028 Two Way Immersion (TWI) students must take chemistry during high school in order to graduate with the TWI designation on their diploma.
TWI students must complete a total of eight TWI credits in order to graduate as a part of the program. These include two TWI sciences, TWI world history, TWI US history and a Spanish language arts each year. These requirements restrict TWI students’ schedules, resulting in one less elective.
One of these credits has been TWI chemistry, however, with the math requirement many students in TWI do not feel ready to complete chemistry their sophomore year.
“Chemistry would be hard because of numbers and math,” said Asher Johnson, freshman.
As a result, TTSD debated if TWI students should continue to take TWI chemistry or start to take TWI forensics instead.
Many TWI students and teachers have different opinions as to what class they should be required to take.
“Personally, I believe I would have preferred to take chemistry just because I am not very interested in forensics,” said Hana LaBeaux, freshman.
On the other hand some students believe that taking in chemistry would be very difficult due to the vocabulary challenges.
“It’ll be easier on me for Spanish and is something I’m more interested in,” said Ruby Mendoza, freshman.
While forensics is still an elective option for TWI students, due to their tight schedule it is very difficult to choose which elective to take.
