Tigard’s Black Student Union (BSU) held elections for president, vice president, secretary, and communications officer on Mon. May 19 after school in room N201. The winners will be announced at BSU’s graduation send-off party located in the courtyard on June 2 at 4 pm.
Candidates pitched their ideas, which are available on Band (put how to access here) and voting took place at that time. The candidates focused on increasing consistent attendance rates, organizing more events, and fundraising.
Tigard’s BSU faces challenges with building a larger community within the school as well as increasing outside support from staff and other Tigard community members.
Members have expressed wanting to share more photos of meetings and events. Additionally, students in BSU want to increase students’ access to BSU support when learning about African American history in US history classes. Many members have reported needing such support after watching graphic depictions of or reading descriptions of African American experiences throughout American history.
