Tigard’s construction team took home several awards from the Design-Build Competition in Salem on May 14 and 15, including the Craftsmanship award and “People’s Choice Award”. Brody Fenton, junior, took home the Outstanding Designated Safety Person award and Adelaide Cardenas won a scholarship for $1500.
The team consisted of seniors Adelaide Cardenas and Noah Stice, as well as juniors Brody Fenton, Daniella Vazquez, Stanley Sanchez, and Dario Avendano Palacios.
On May 14, the team of six traveled down to Salem, Oregon to compete in the two day competition, where according to James Swindle, advisor, Tigard students did not disappoint.
“We were the smallest team at the competition and while we may have lacked in numbers, we stood out as the most cohesive, organized, and prepared builders in the competition,” Swindle said.
The team spent the past five months preparing for the competition. Each student had to complete a cover letter, a letter of recommendation, a resume, and then an interview conducted by a panel of building administrators in order to be hired onto the team. From there, they prepared by meeting with an architect, completing OSHA 10 training, and building a shed at Durham Elementary School.
“If you see the following students today, give them a fist bump for nailing this experience and representing Tigard High School well!” Swindle said.
