Intro to Forensics Science

The idea of offering forensic science came from the counselors and the administration. Then the idea was passed on to the science department, who developed it into an elective that is offered next year.

“I’ve always thought it was interesting and I’ve thought about it as a career path before,” junior Ellie Hajduk said.

Forensic scientists usually have a four-year undergraduate in chemistry, biology, and natural science. They have to have patience and need to be able to observe things with an analytical approach.

Forensics is using science to solve crimes.

“It will be very hands-on and we’ll do a lot of labs. The first year we try this, it will be interesting to see how much interest there is in [forensics],” Physics teacher Kyle Mueller said.  

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average forensic scientists make around $57,000. They normally work in a laboratory or look at crime scenes or physical evidence.  

“I like solving things and I also really like science, so solving crimes using science seems really interesting,” freshman MacKenzie Guentert said.

In the next couple weeks there will be a decision on who will be teaching forensics and the periods it is offered. This is largely dependent upon on the number of students forecasting for it and how many teachers are willing to teach the subject.
