Protect the skin you’re in!

By Tate Watson, Staff Writer

As the weather heats up and everyone starts to spend more time outside in the sun wearing less clothing, it can be easy to forget about how damaging sun exposure can be while you’re trying to achieve the perfect tan. Keep your skin looking young and healthy (and yes, still tan!) with these tips.

As far as when to go outside and when to avoid UV rays, the sun is at it’s brightest from 10 am- 4 pm so that’s when you need to layer on the sunscreen if you’re trying to go out. You’ll still be able to achieve a little color if you put on sunscreen but you’ll protect your skin from some of the harmful UV rays the sun projects out. Typically you shouldn’t go any lower than SPF 15 to get the most sun protection and you want to make sure to reapply often, especially if you’re swimming or in water.

If you’re the type of person who turns bright red after five minutes in the sun or if you just don’t want to risk skin cancer from high sun exposure, using a high SPF and a tanning lotion might be your best bet. There’s plenty of sunscreens that have color in them and will gradually tan you the more you use them. Just make sure to wash your hands off quickly after applying lotion- you don’t want orange hands!

Here are some sunscreens and products that will get you through the summer:
